Suburban Fire Safety Concerns: A Case for Improved Resources and Response Times
Fire Rescue Victoria (FRV) has been under scrutiny for its failure to meet emergency response targets, particularly in outer suburban areas. Since its formation in 2020, FRV has consistently missed its target of responding to 90% of structural fires within seven minutes and 42 seconds, with the situation worsening in fast-growing outer suburban regions.
This issue is further exacerbated by the fact that FRV's budget has increased by 33% since 2020, largely due to a significant rise in wages. However, the United Firefighters Union (UFU) argues that the state government has failed to adequately resource the restructure, leading to under-resourced stations and longer response times.
The recent tragedy in Werribee, where a three-year-old boy, Jordan Dashwood, lost his life in a house fire, highlights the urgent need for improvement. The fire was within FRV's response area, but the crew was attending a car crash, resulting in a delayed response. This incident underscores the challenges faced by FRV in serving rapidly growing outer suburban areas.
The UFU's Peter Marshall emphasizes the need for additional fire stations and resources to protect the growing population. He argues that the lack of new stations and firefighters has led to under-resourced areas, with a single-appliance station unable to provide adequate coverage. This situation is particularly critical in areas like Tarneit and Point Cook, where the population exceeds 350,000.
Despite the criticism, the Emergency Services Minister, Vicki Ward, claims that FRV's response times have improved and are faster than those in other states. However, Liberal MP Nick McGowan disagrees, stating that Melbourne's outer growth suburbs are being left behind in terms of fire safety infrastructure.
