An Unrivaled game came to an unexpected pause when Aaliyah Edwards was injured during play.
The second season of the 3x3 women’s basketball league, known as Unrivaled, faced a sudden interruption following an alarming incident involving star player Aaliyah Edwards. This occurred with just over a minute left in the third quarter of the intense match between the Lunar Owls and Rose. Edwards, who had previously claimed the runner-up spot in last February’s inaugural Unrivaled 1-on-1 tournament, attempted a breakaway layup after receiving a pass from teammate Marina Mabrey.
As she ascended to make her shot, Shakira Austin from the opposing team blocked her from behind, causing Edwards to fall hard onto the court. Unfortunately, her head hit the padded base of the hoop while Austin landed heavily on her leg.
While Edwards lay on the floor in apparent distress, several players from the Rose team quickly moved a nearby camera aside to create a private space for her. Others surrounded her with towels as medical personnel rushed to provide assistance. As the situation unfolded, analyst Lisa Leslie provided commentary, saying, "That was tough right there because Aaliyah Edwards landed very awkwardly. And again, no malice intended but it was the landing.
"And then the leg spins the wrong way. That's one of those yoga poses. You see somebody in the pose that I don't think you're supposed to be in, that's tough.
"This is always the toughest part of the game. It's just, you know, injuries and the possibilities of what could go wrong."
Fortunately, Edwards managed to walk off the court under her own power, receiving enthusiastic cheers from fans present at Sephora Arena. However, she was later ruled out for the remainder of Monday’s game due to an upper-body injury. Before her departure, she had achieved an impressive performance, scoring 23 points, grabbing 12 rebounds, and making one steal, all of which were the highest for her team, with a shooting accuracy of 10-of-19 from the field.
In the aftermath of the incident, social media erupted with supportive messages for Edwards. Fans expressed their relief and hope for her swift recovery. One user on X commented, "Happy to see Aaliyah Edwards getting up and walking under her own power; hope she'll be okay," while another insisted, "They better put Aaliyah Edwards on concussion protocol right now!"
A third fan shared their amazement, stating, "I’m amazed & very glad Aaliyah Edwards was able to get up and look ok after that fall because that was a scary one." Earlier in the week, Edwards had conveyed her excitement about playing in Unrivaled again, where she first made a name for herself last season. Leslie added, "She's talked to me in practice a few days ago about how excited she is, not that she is hurt but the opportunity that she'll have to fill these plays, playing in the winter. So we hope that she can recover from whatever her injury is right now and still have the opportunity to play."
This incident raises significant questions about player safety in competitive sports. Do you think enough precautions are being taken to protect athletes during games? Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments below!
